Professional interests
Medical education, LGBT+ healthcare and mental health. Three areas that shape my clinical practice, teaching and supervision.
Medical education
Medical education is a central part of my professional work.
I am interested in helping healthcare professionals develop the knowledge, confidence and judgement required for safe, compassionate and patient-centred practice.
Areas of focus
- Clinical reasoning
- Managing uncertainty
- Consultation and communication skills
- Reflective practice
- Learner wellbeing
- Inclusive healthcare education
- Constructive feedback
- Workplace-based assessment
- Patient safety
- Supporting professional confidence
- Teaching sensitive and challenging consultations
I aim to create supportive learning environments in which learners can discuss uncertainty, identify development needs and reflect honestly on their clinical practice.
LGBT+ healthcare
I have a strong interest in improving healthcare experiences and outcomes for LGBT+ people.
LGBT+ patients can encounter assumptions, barriers and inequalities when accessing healthcare. Inclusive practice requires more than appropriate terminology. It requires curiosity, respect, awareness and a willingness to understand the individual patient's circumstances.
Areas of focus
- Inclusive and affirming communication
- Creating psychologically safe consultations
- Understanding barriers to accessing healthcare
- Avoiding assumptions about identity, relationships and sexual behaviour
- LGBT+ mental health
- Sexual and reproductive healthcare
- Supporting clinicians to discuss identity sensitively
- Developing inclusive medical education
- Improving confidence in caring for diverse patient communities
I believe that inclusive healthcare should be embedded throughout clinical practice and medical education rather than treated as a separate or optional subject.
Mental health
Mental health is a significant part of my work in general practice.
I have experience supporting patients with anxiety, depression, suicidality, self-harm, psychosocial crises and complex risk. I also regularly encounter the ways in which mental health is affected by physical illness, identity, social circumstances, relationships and access to support.
My approach is calm, compassionate and non-judgemental. I aim to understand the person's wider circumstances while assessing immediate risk, safeguarding concerns and the need for further support or escalation.
Areas of focus
- Anxiety and depression
- Suicide and self-harm risk
- Psychosocial distress
- LGBT+ mental health
- Mental health inequalities
- Sensitive and trauma-aware communication
- Safeguarding
- Shared decision-making
- Continuity of care
- Supporting clinicians with difficult conversations
- Mental health teaching and supervision
